Edwards County Roads Project

Southwest Kansas is on the brink of significant economic growth with the construction of Hilmar Cheese's new factory in Dodge City. This development is further bolstered by the establishment of Blue Sky Dairy in Edwards County. To support this economic boom, MJE, LLC was awarded the prime contract for the Edwards County Road Development project. The project's goal is to upgrade local roads to handle increased traffic and enhance the region's infrastructure, paving the way for a prosperous future.

Challenge

The existing road infrastructure in Edwards County consists mainly of loose sand and gravel, making it inadequate for the expected surge in truck and passenger vehicle traffic. These roads lack proper drainage and become impassable during wet conditions. The increased traffic from Blue Sky Dairy operations necessitates significant upgrades to ensure safe and efficient transportation. Additionally, the project had to secure adequate funding and align with local and state regulations.

MJE recognized the need for a comprehensive approach to address the required road improvements. The project involves upgrading dirt roads to concrete-paved roads, improving drainage, and widening intersections to accommodate heavy traffic. Each segment of the road improvements is meticulously planned to ensure systematic progress and efficient use of resources. This strategic approach provides a clear roadmap for the project’s success, instilling confidence in the thorough planning and execution of the road development.

Collaboration

MJE worked closely with Edwards County Commissioners and the Edwards County Economic Development Center to address infrastructure needs. The project secured a $3 million grant from the KDOT Economic Development Program, with Blue Sky Dairy also contributing funds. This substantial local contribution is a testament to the strong partnership and commitment of the community. Regular meetings with local stakeholders ensure alignment on project goals and progress, highlighting the integral role of the community in fostering economic development and improving living standards.

Custom Solution

To meet the project’s unique requirements, MJE implemented innovative solutions, such as custom-designed paving techniques and advanced drainage systems. The road improvements were tailored to handle heavy milk tankers and increased traffic safely. MJE’s expertise in handling complex infrastructure challenges was crucial in executing this project.
